Charge: Arminianism magnifies man’s will
Calvinist Complaint: Arminianism magnifies man’s will
One Calvinist explains: “If Calvinism isn’t a true representation of the work of salvation, then what alternatives are there that do not make the will of mankind stronger than the will of God? In other words, consider the following supposition: IF Christ died for all as the provision made by an all-powerful God, AND some people can actually refuse this provision and not reap any of the benefits, THEN, how is it possible to say that the will of God is stronger than the will of mankind?”
1st Corinthians 10:13 states: “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”
Provision: The provision in this example is that of a “way of escape,” which gives the implication of an additional option.
Stronger: God is stronger, since He is the One to whom we must give an account for whether we take the way of escape or not. Also, God is stronger since, by His omnipotence, He limits our range of choices, insomuch that He prevents us from being tempted beyond what we can handle.
